Uh, yeah, by replacing it with Mandrake 9.1 or 9.2 and checking the 'use utf8' box during install, which appears to set up the locale properly. The little poking I have done on the RH box at one of my clients seems to indicate they are still having issues with locale, though I didn't figure out exactly WHY.
Personally I just think RH 9 is a turkey. Lots of stuff is broken, esp perl stuff. > Thanks for your help. Anyone else manage to solve this problem on redhat > 9?
