OK I finally got it - this is a Perl 5.8 effect. The temporary fix is to put this at the top of your stylesheet:
<% use encoding "utf8"; %>
It works with the xpathscript command, but not inside AxKit. A question:
Warning, this has a process-wide, irrevocable effect (e.g. *all* output from this interpreter instance will be UTF-8 - it had better serve only AxKit pages and not write temp files on disk)
Do you mean I should disable disk cache?
