Dear Tom:

Your great-grandmother was probably baptized simply as Margarida. She
acquired the name Margarida de Jesus from her parents and by the time she was a
young
woman she would have been known as Margarida de Jesus (not as Margarida
Pedro, Margarida Rodrigues or Margarida Pedro Rodrigues: women of that era were
almost never known by anything other than their Christian names unless they
were
socially prominent and/or of the nobility.) So, Margarida de Jesus was a first
and middle name, like Michael Edward or Margaret Mary. Pedro/ Rodrigues/
Pedro Rodrigues was her family name and Costa was her husband's name. In the
Azores she would have been known as Margarida de Jesus throughout her lifetime.

Hope this helps.
