*Thanks Cheri: I do remember what many of you have discussed regarding that hard and fast rule for last names in the Azores: there is none! It's just hard to break that habit of wanting everything to of fit like a puzzle.
I was curious about the first wife because of her untimely death and the remarriage of the husband 2 yrs later. The coincidence of the witness being a Mathias de Mello of the first wedding and then being the father of the second bride hinted that they could be sisters. Mathias isn't a common name so I'm jumping to conclusion that he's the same man. Although my husband came through the second wife this is one of those nagging questions that I'll have to research.
