I'm not sure where the Santo Cristo activities are (I know the statue itself is more on the western end of town), but I don't think that Ponta Delgada is much more than one mile east to west. Could be 1.25 miles, but I don't think it's 1.5 miles. So if you don't mind walking, I would think anywhere within the city would be fine.
Last time I was there, a new Days Inn or a Holiday Inn or something has just opened (this was 4 years ago). I'll have to look for the business card. It wasn't too far from the old jail, if anyone knows what I'm talking about. I didn't stay there. I usually opt for the "residentials" which are their 2nd class hotels (kinda Motel 6 like).
