Pat, it could be as your oral history says. However, my grandfather left the
continent of Portugal from Lisbon on a British ship that sailed to Liverpool,
England before coming to New York. I can see him (or someone else) saying that
he had come from England because, in fact, that was the last port from which he
sailed.
I always try to remember that someone who does not speak or understand English
was at the mercy of those who were "helping" answer questions that were asked
in English. Imagine the fear, confusion, fatigue, etc. that our ancestors felt
while trying to answer questions they did not comprehend. Celeste, Hayward,
