I found on one of my relatives that were born in ribeira grande - he was listed
as being born in rio de janeiro brazil - the people in charge of the manifests
of the people boarding the ships weren't portuguese so anything could have been
recorded due to te language barrier

Subject: [AZORES-Genealogy] Great Britian citizenship?

I have a question. Has anyone else found their ancestors changed their
nationality? On my Grandfather's Ellis Island Manifest he listed his
nationality as Great Britian, but his country of origin as Portugal. I
do remember my mother telling me he came the the US to avoid being
drafted. Apparently when you reached a certain age, you had to serve
in the military. Does any of this make sense to anyone?
                    Thanks,
                        Pat
