First, thank you all for the ideas.

Rick,

How would I go about finding his petition? My mother says she thinks it was
somewhere around 1926 but she's not sure. The only absolute was that he was
living in California in the San Francisco Bay Area at the time. The family
had his birth certificate from Faial at one point, but since his and my
grandmother's deaths, no one knows where it went or remembers how it was
obtained. I have never seen it as it was lost long before I started my
research unfortunately.

Hi Jacki

If your grandfather was Naturalized then his Petition for Naturalization
would provide a wealth of information as to his arrival in the US.

Jacki,

You will need to check the Boston arrivals as well as the Ellis Island
arrivals. More info on how to do that can be found here:
http://homepage.mac.com/kmacardoza/Genealogy/HowTo.html
(Scroll down to "Passenger Arrival Lists.")

Records from the Azores are starting to come online, but nothing from Faial
yet. Once you exhaust your U.S. sources, you might consider hiring a
researcher to look at the port of Horta, Faial, in their ships lists leaving
the Azores. A list of researchers for hire can be found here:
http://homepage.mac.com/kmacardoza/Genealogy/azoresindex.html#researchers
