First, thank you all for the ideas. Rick, How would I go about finding his petition? My mother says she thinks it was somewhere around 1926 but she's not sure. The only absolute was that he was living in California in the San Francisco Bay Area at the time. The family had his birth certificate from Faial at one point, but since his and my grandmother's deaths, no one knows where it went or remembers how it was obtained.
