The 1930 census says what looks like Pd. I am assuming that that may mean
"pending". I was able to find the manifest of the ship that he arrived on
last night and there is a notation on it with a date of April 1938. Another
researcher told me that was made by the immigration dept. My mother keeps
saying that she thought is was in the late twenties but I called my aunt
last night and she said she thought she was around 12 when he became a
citizen and she was born in 1927. That would be right in line with the 1938
notation. She also said they had to go to San Francisco for it. There is a
regional center in San Bruno which is about 15 miles south so I guess I will
start there. The strange thing though, is, I have a copy of his application
for a Soc Sec. number. He did that in Dec 1936. How would he have gotten a
number if he wasn't a citizen yet? Maybe they didn't actually issue it until
1938?

Thanks for the help
Jacki

Hi Jacki,

First check the 1930 US Census to see if he was a Citizen. If he was then
depending on where he lived the court that had jurisdiction at the time
would have the records. Many immigrants did not apply for citizenship until
the late 1930's when social security was started. At that time you had to be
a US citizen to get social security.

Citizen ship records could be in a state district court such as records for
Attleboro, MA up till the 1940's were kept at the Taunton district Court and
then transferred to the State Archives in Boston. Later records in the
1950's were done in Federal courts and are now in the Federal Archives in
Waltham MA.

First, thank you all for the ideas.

Rick,

How would I go about finding his petition? My mother says she thinks it was
somewhere around 1926 but she's not sure. The only absolute was that he was
living in California in the San Francisco Bay Area at the time. The family
had his birth certificate from Faial at one point, but since his and my
grandmother's deaths, no one knows where it went or remembers how it was
obtained. I have never seen it as it was lost long before I started my
research unfortunately.

Hi Jacki

If your grandfather was Naturalized then his Petition for Naturalization
would provide a wealth of information as to his arrival in the US.

Jacki,

You will need to check the Boston arrivals as well as the Ellis Island
arrivals. More info on how to do that can be found here:
http://homepage.mac.com/kmacardoza/Genealogy/HowTo.html
(Scroll down to "Passenger Arrival Lists.")

Records from the Azores are starting to come online, but nothing from Faial
yet. Once you exhaust your U.S. sources, you might consider hiring a
researcher to look at the port of Horta, Faial, in their ships lists leaving
the Azores. A list of researchers for hire can be found here:
