I haven't had the horror stories some of you have had, but I do have my ancestry.com information public. I found two fourth cousins, a granddaughter of a second cousin who is quite elderly and hasn't given me much information, and someone researching the Benarus side who turns out to be a distant cousin. Can't get very far on my Seriqui side, though, although some in this group have told me a few stories which is wonderful. While looking at another's information, I discovered that they had the parents born after their children! I wrote to the person whose ancestry line this is and reminded them of the goof. :-) Now another person has my Kozik (Austrian) side on their site so I did just write to them asking how "we" are related. I always wondered why people kept their site private while they could access the public sites without feeling guilty!

Eric, I too verify information I gather from out there. Someone took my information and has my grandfather becoming a father at 8 years old! I keep my info public because I am always hoping a distant family member will find me. I have located quite a few and two of them we had never heard of as that branch in our tree had lost contact. Always pros and cons.

    Linda,
Keeping the tree private can prevent some of this. Since you
control who sees the tree, only those you allow in can borrow
things. My reason for having the tree up is to gather distant
family members who are researching, so I'll put up with the
borrowing and leave my tree public.

How do you avoid this? Does making your tree private help at
        all? Linda
