Denis/Cheri-- I use FamilyTreeMaker version 2010.(We don;t have a TMG group here.) I have noticed the same problem. The way I deal with it is just to correct the record as I go along; otherwise six months from now you will accept all the names as correct when in fact they don't match up with the primary source record (baptism, marriage or death). As for naming traditions, my paternal grandmother's birth surname was Monteiro, but when she came to this country, she took her paternal grandmother's surname and her sister when she came to this country took their maternal grandmother's surname. Why? I have no clue. This is all just as a point of reference. Good luck.
