I know it's been a couple of weeks, but I just wanted to say that my father
and his two brothers were all barbers. My father worked for the some type of
tax department in Sao Miguel. When he came here he became a barber because
he didn't have the education to do anything else. He retired and worked as a
bank courier. His brother came here served in the military and became a
barber. Later in life he became a builder/carpenter which was something he
was great at. He found his real vocation. The youngest brother became a
barber here since he was young and stayed a barber till he retired.

It seems like that was the only occupation they could do once they came here
with no real education. My mother's side were furniture builders or
carpenters.

Dear Chris:

Whew! You have gone back into the 1500!s and you said, "that's all I have"
(?) !!!!!

First thing that caught my eye was that Francisco Joaquim Muniz was a
"hairdresser". I found that really meant Barber. My husband had a great
grandfather who came to America as teenager and for a time in the City
Directory it listed his occupation as hairdresser, then in subsequent U S
Census it stated, Barber. That mans name was Domingos Moniz Machado and he
went to Tufts University and became a dentist. His brother, Clem Machado
was also listed as Hairdresser/Barber and later on he was a leather cutter.
That brother changed the name to Marshall.

Paul's paternal grandfather whose name was Jacintho Jose De Lima (like his
father, the goldminer, was a Barber and I have in my possession a notebook
of his store's employees and accounting. Jacintho never knew his father
because after Charlotte died in Australia, Jacintho Jose, senior, returned
to the island of Sao Miguel and married his first cousin, Maria Adelaide da
Silva. Within 3 months of his wedding, jacintho Jose, who had survived
teenage years and his early youth in the hardship life of a goldminer, died
in the Azores. He had sired a son but died not knowing his name would
continue. Apparently he and his Jose Jacintho, had brought back $ fm the
Goldfields
Because he/ they purchased property. Later, when the widow Maria Adelaide
remarried, the husband gambled away the family's "fortune". Jacintho Jose
de Lima, the son, actually wrote a 32 page autobiography that I found among
my deceased mother in law's belongings. If I had not been genealogy
oriented, that could have been thrown out. It was full of dates names and
his feelings toward the stepfather, whose name he never mentioned.

I would like to go nxt week to the family history center and see if I can
find yr ancestor, Francisco Joaquim Moniz. Did u already order films from
the Family History Center? I have a film or two from Rosto de Cao, Sao
Roque. That parish is very close to the Sao Pedro. It's worth a try-just
don't want to duplicate your efforts.

Maybe u will also get help fm others here who are very familiar with these
parishes (freguesias) and where they have all the films in their F H C.

Cheers,

Maria Elena

on the Water Lily. WOW! So they probably knew each other. There had to be
some serious planning and money to leave the Azores for the Goldfields. As
I recall, they arrived in Melbourne and had to get transport to goldfields.
They must have had some contact with someone in Australia that took them to
Creswick area. (why not Bendigo?)
>>
>> I found the 2 Lima brothers through the Creswick and Clunes advertiser
and Reporter. That was several yrs ago; last week when I got your email, I
went back and it's more complicated now. it looks like Rootsweb has taken
over- when u enter in the name into the Creswick and Clunes site, it takes
u to a Rootsweb page. Because the 2 Lima brothers were listed 18 times in
the newspaper, -the miners took each other to court for any reason- I was
able to write and even call and got copies of the newspaper articles each
time they appeared with all the detail. That was a great day when I got
that package with all those articles. There were court cases where Jacintho
was in a fight with another guy over turning on the water race. There were
ads- especially sad when Jacintho advertised sale of His deceased wife's
fruit/confectionery store as he was leaving country. I felt he was broken
and "going home". There was a wonderful lady fm the Goldfields List
(Brenda) who helped me and was an Angel helping me.

them leaving, though. I also believe their father and his brother in law, j
j Borges, went to Hong Kong to buy the "water race" pipes they used at the
Humbughill Sluicing Company.
>>
>> It was through a member of this list, Shirley Allegre, that I learned
that when the ancestor was being married in the Azores and the priest
recorded he was widower of Dona Carlota Augusta, buried in (?)Australia.
That was the key that sent me to the goldfields. Up to that time, it was
just heresy from my mother in law that there were 2 brothers who were
goldminers in Australia. But she did not know anything else.
>>
>> I always wished I could find more on what role the father, Antonio Jose
De Lima and Jacintho Jose Borges played in setting up the sons in business.
I know Jose spoke English and he is the one who married Charlotte Staley.
It appeared her name was not Carlota Augusta, but Charlotte Staley. Her
first husband could not be found in your Pioneer Index.

shared those experiences.
