Normally, the options are: move in with living family members, inlaws or godparents. Failing any of those resources younger children might be placed in an ophanage, older boys might be apprenticed off, find a berth on a ship, join the military, or, just find work locally to support themselves, and/or, the family; unmarried older girls, and, young women, had fewer options - they could either enter the convent or get married.
