The Panama Canal was finished in 1910.
Many Portuguese who came to California were by way of Hawaii.  I had an Uncle
Jose Martin da Costa who went to Hawaii in 1882, then he traveled to California
where he and my Aunty Joaquina  brought their children in about 1905.  They
were one of many Portuguese who left Hawaii for California.

My ancestor in 1890 came by ship to Boston, then by rail  to New Orleans and on
to California.

Lorinda,

(Sorry for the misfire there).

As Dano eluded to, I think it depends more on the time period.  The Panama
Canal was around the 19teens, if my memory serves me correctly.

However, I'm pretty sure most Portuguese came to the east coast first (if
headed for America.  Remember, Hawaii was not a state until 1959).  Then many
made their way overland (most likely train).  I don't remember where I read
that.  When I find that source, I will post it.

If you post the approximate dates for immigration to America (and repost the
names for those who didn't catch it the first time) along with approximate
birth dates, someone on this list might be able to point you in the right
direction.
