My Grandmother, Maria de Gloria Silveira, from Faial, came by boat to the East Coast in 1892 and several years later, traveled to California by train. My Grandfather, Francisco Jose Luiz (Lewis) and the rest of his family that followed later came "around the Horn" about the 1870's. According to family lore, my Grandfather told of how dangerous the trip around the horn was in those days. Storms and lack of food and supplies were prevalent. I have not been able to locate him or any of his family on any ship manifest. Mary Ann In a message dated 10/19/2011 8:27:24 P.M. Pacific Daylight Time, [email protected] writes:
Does anyone have any idea how most of the Azoreans traveled to California? I assume they took a boat from the Azores (there was no other way off before air planes LOL), but did they complete the trip around So. America and up to California by boat or did they disembark in New York/Boston and travel by land to California? I've been trying to find a passenger list with my grandfather/great-grandmother on it but haven't had any success.
