Pat, Since you have a name, date, and place, you can just order the film from your local FHC and start looking. The records in the Azores are mainly the Catholic baptisms, marriages, and deaths.
Go to the FHLC and type in Sao Vicente Ferreira or Arrifes and have someone help you order the film. If you don't read Portuguese, there's a guide on the Azores Genweb: http://www.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~azrwgw/HowTo.html (scroll down to the bottom - Part 3 on how to read). Once you collect all the siblings and cousins in question, you may be able to tie in the Furtados. It's tough now-a-days to trace forward to find living relatives. Everyone has privacy concerns. I'd just trace backwards in time until you find someone else researching that family. From there, you may be able to eventually find living relatives.
