Tony,

I don't live in New Zealand and have never done New Zealand research.  I
would guess that you would have to trace him in NZ with every source you
can find.  Death records, marriage records, obituaries, their kids'
baptisms, etc.  Your local genealogy society probably has a list regarding
how to trace an immigrant ancestor out of NZ.  I think there may be a
couple of NZ researchers on this list too.  Maybe they will have ideas for
you.
