Hi Tony, My GG Grandfather was also from Flores, Azores (Ponta Delgada)... Left as 14yr old & jumped from a whaling ship in Wellington at about 18yrs. Eventually became naturalised & married an English Settlers' daughter - they had 9 children in NZ.
We found that his name changed from the original, perhaps officially when signing his naturalisation documents...The NZ family knew him as Manuel Jose Bernard, yet he was Jose Bernardo de Almeida at birth. He has a few relatives also called Francisco Jose, but the DOB does not match - could be a cousin! We've pieced together much of Manuels tree re ancestors thanks to this group & 'Azores Nation' website... Still hoping to find some more of his siblings & their descendants. Let us know how you get on, Anita On May 19, 3:49 pm, "Tony" <[email protected]> wrote: > Francis Joseph was born in 1833, some where in the Azores. His Father was > carpenter named Antonio.
