Hi Laura, I did a bit more digging and think that perhaps my Jose de Sousa da Silva and yours aren't the same person. A cousin of mine is doing some digging into the family history as well and came up with 7 siblings (no twins) for my great grandfather Jose, none of which were named Feliciano. I originally thought he only had one brother based on the only photograph we have of them.... not sure why the rest of the kids aren't in the photo - that was sort of weird...
What I was trying to figure out is if the Jose Sousa Silva listed on the passenger manifest above Feliciano is actually Feliciano's twin brother or just coincidentally someone with the same name and age. I've pulled up both the manifest from the Roma in 1915 and also the manifest for Jose S. Silva from the Cretic (June 28, 1910). What I didn't notice at first is that only half of the data on the initial page. So for the Roma, page 43. If you tab over to page 44, and look at lines 10, 11, and 12, you can see additional information about our relatives to include the individual that were going to stay with in the U.S. Jose is listed as staying with his brother Manuel Sousa at 44 Orchard St. in Providence, RI. While my relative didn't have a brother Feliciano that I know of, he did have an older brother Manuel S Lamb who I believe to have also gone by Manuel Sousa. Manuel was the oldest child so I'm guessing he was given the name Lamb to distinguish him from his father Manuel Sousa Silva. Not sure where Lamb came from... but from what I understand, family names aren't always taken from the mother's or father's name. All of the other children in the family used Silva. So, I'm thinking that perhaps the two individuals listed on the Roma manifest aren't twins but perhaps were good friends or even cousins having grown up in the same town and having been the same age.... perhaps they just decided to travel together? I would suggest searching for the name as it appears on the baptism records (Joao). You could also try, John, Jon, or Johnny. I can't tell you how many uncle Johnny's we've had in our family whose name is actually Joao. I did some digging and came up with a Joao de Sousa da Silva that came to the U.S. (New Bedford) on the Patria on June 27, 1904 at the age of "13" and stayed with an uncle in Lowell. Hope this is helpful! Kate On Thursday, July 19, 2012 2:48:13 PM UTC-4, Laura Share wrote: > > In response to K Amaral's message-- > > Hello, Kate. > > I am so excited!
