Re the file conversion:
I was able to convert it in the Windows Live Photo Gallery viewer from Windows Live Essentials (free download from Microsoft) by going to File, Make A Copy and selecting jpg as the format. There may be an equivalent in Windows Photo Viewer. I couldn't open it in any of my photo editing programs to save it as a jpeg, but the Make a Copy worked.
