I visited Sao Miguel on three occasions. When I arrived in my family's
ancestral village for the first time, I thought for sure that no one
would have any idea who I was, nor remembered my parents, who had
emigrated to the US generations earlier. I was wrong. They not only
knew who we were, but, the whole village turned out to greet us. We
were introduced to family members we didn't know existed. They
followed us around from house to house. It was like a moving party. On
the weekend before we left, some of my relatives, and some of their
friends,(about thirty, or so) threw us a farewell picnic at a local
park. We were invited back for my cousin's wedding the following
year.
