My maiden name was Mello. My Grandfather, Francisco Vieira deMello, came
from the Azores in the 1860's. The story I have is that his father, who
may also have been Francisco, came first to work in the goldfields of
California. He wrote his sons to come and 3 of them did. One, my
Grandfather Francico, stayed in California and the other two went to the
East Coast. I have no information on them. My Grandfather was from the
village of Lages, Pico. His wife was Catarina Xavier, from Silveira,
Pico. I do have information of relative on my grandmother's side but
nothing about my grandfather's side. Could his middle name, Vieira, be a
clue. He gave that name to all his sons as their middle name. Shirley
Mello Fabel
