Hi Shirley! Do you live on the east or west coast? My maiden name was Mello....have JUST started doing research on my grandparents - my Dad was in his forties when I was born and most of his family was dying off. I had no grandparents and now being 69 myself have no Portagee family to get info from. I do know my dad was born in Honokaa, HI and he had no middle name -- I guess they ran out of names after 16 kids! I also JUST found out my grandparents came from the Azores (what island, I don't know) found each other in Hawaii and married there. I was always under the impression they married in the Azores. I know I have a whole lot of research to do but am on a trip right now so can't start again.
My grandparents name are so conventional - being Manuel (middle name? maybe starts with "F") and her name Maria Medeiros Mello....Gee, I should be glad it wasn't John and Mary Smith! LOL. Anyway, just happy to see another Mello mention Cali. Happy Researching! My Grandfather, Francisco Vieira deMello, came from the Azores in the 1860's. The story I have is that his father, who may also have been Francisco, came first to work in the goldfields of California. He wrote his sons to come and 3 of them did. One, my Grandfather Francico, stayed in California and the other two went to the East Coast. I have no information on them. My Grandfather was from the village of Lages, Pico. His wife was Catarina Xavier, from Silveira, Pico. I do have information of relative on my grandmother's side but nothing about my grandfather's side. Could his middle name, Vieira, be a clue. He gave that name to all his sons as their middle name.
