Hi Margaret,

Thank you for your thoughts on these records and the further insight you
have as an experienced reader of records. This further confirms my thoughts
that these are twins and that just a minor mistake was made in writing the
name of the father on the second record. I am planning on looking at the
Obito's in that parish to see if they survived the first few months in the
next week.

Hi,

Based on both records the child was baptized at home by the midwife.

Examining the differences: Godparents is absent from the first record which
is typical of many home baptisms and the priest notes having anointed her
with the Holy oils.

The 2nd record shows a different name for the father but the priest could
have written "Manuel" in error probably automatically writing the paternal
grandfather's name and not catching the error...and it shows the Godparent
as Antonio Lopes Cabral, single.

One other thing that seems to differentiate the two records are the
witnesses. Record 1) Manuel Joao Pereira and Antonio Cabral Botelho.
Record 2) Manuel Jose Pereira and Jose do Rego which would seem to indicate
a timing difference on the actual anointment in the church.

I've seen many "double" records for twins where the priest makes no
reference of such. There's a strong possibility these are two different
records.

I checked again, everything else is the same. So I would say he rewrote the
record to correct the name of the father and nothing more There is only one
Maria. Of course this is an educated guess, it could be there are two
Maria's after all, but it strikes me as less probable.

I think the answer lies in what you already know. That the name should have
been Antonio not Manuel. The only thing missing are the usually words to
indicate a correction of the record. But since he probably knew these
people, he may not have bothered to make the notation. That's my guess.

This record has me scratching my head. The only difference in the two
records is the name of the father. I have other records of Antonio Cabral de
Mederios and Emilia de Jesus and this birth fits right in.
