Greeneye,

This list deals with the Azores islands off the coast of Portugal, but the
genealogy trail is the same. You need the village that your ancestor came
from so you can begin your search.

Since your ancestors were able to write, you may have more of a paper
trail. Was there an envelope with this letter? Any clues to locations
from there? Yes, cunhado is brother-in-law. You'll need to get his death
certificate, his obituary, his marriage info, census work, naturalization
info, etc.

Yes, many people here have taken a DNA test. Family Tree DNA is the
company that we use as it yields the most results. "Uncertain" results
sounds like the stories I'm hearing from a lot of Ancestry DNA customers.
I think only a handful of people with Portuguese ancestry tested there. On
FTDNA, the Portugal project has 354 members, the Azores has 447, Madeira
has 123, and Cape Verde has 125. Brazil (the country) has 287. That's
over 1000 people with Portuguese ancestry, but some people have ancestry in
more than one location, so adding up the numbers doesn't give the whole
picture. But I would think that there's about 1000 people with Portuguese
ancestry who tested their DNA with FTDNA. It seems that we are having the
most success with the Family Finder test that FTDNA offers.
