My great aunt is buried in MA with a family and they are not related. We think but not sure they might be related to her daughter's ex husband. My great aunt was suppose to be buried in Boston with her husband. Instead she is buried in a pauper's grave in another local town and she could have afforded it but she had no known living relatives (even though she did). We think it is because she and her husband were first cousins. My great grandmother we thought was buried in our family plot but the cemetery says she is not buried there. In days past they would put the name on the family stone and bury them elsewhere, perhaps taking them "back home.
I have been told by cemeteries that sometimes friends, employers offered spaces at their gravesites. In Europe they resell the gravesites if the family does not pay for the upkeep. And whoever can afford it buys the gravesite and is buried there. My family in Croatia has their stones lining the walls of the cemetery as they no longer own the gravesite.
