Paul G,

Good question. I had that in my tree. I swear it was one of my Aguedas.
I don't have it entered in my tree, so I must have the paperwork
somewhere. The wife died right after childbirth so the husband married his
mother-in-law (whom I seem to remember as Agueda). I seem to remember it
was only 2 months. This was the 1700s, if memory serves me. It was not
proper to have a woman living in your house unless you were married to
her. So he had to marry the children's grandmother. (She was widowed
too). So maybe it's a question of necessity? (Agueda - accent over the A,
pronounced AH-gee-dah, and it means Agatha).

I swear my cousin in Vila Franca said the widows wore black forever, then
for a year, and now they wear it for as long as they feel is appropriate.
I don't remember him mentioning a waiting period though.

Hopefully someone knows more than I do about this.
