>From what I remember women in general would have to wait a year, however a man could get married right away if marrying a girl that had never been married. The women wore black, forever it seemed. If the woman was interested in getting married she would ditch the black to announce or let the community know that she was available to remarry. The rules for widows varied from town to town as well as from one island to the other. My grandmother was widowed in 1925 when she died in the 70's she still wore black although towards the end of her life she would on occasion wear browns mixed with black
