That article by Carl Zimmer mentioned a way to see people connected from much longer than just 200 years ago. And they can't be talking about y-DNA or they would not say what they did.

I think the 200 year view is way off for the Azores, citing my own real findings and proof of relationships from my past messages on DNA. I think it's more like 400 for the Azores no matter what they tell you.

And then that Zimmer article also confirmed what I thought about the block size being larger means more recent. Doesn't it follow that smaller means more distant? It's just math. So those tiny fragments must be very remote.

They say 200 years because a 7cM block might be from 200 years ago. But the smaller blocks are there to see and so must be older.

As for the DNA being boiled, are you suggesting that one ancestor's DNA might show up here and there as fragments? If so, then the 11 common segments could mean 3 or 7 or some other number of common ancestors, right?

I'll be interested in how you might be able to clarify it, though.

I don't think anyone on this list has to be the ultimate expert on DNA before they can ask questions about it.

Doug,

Instead of posting this to the list, just email me directly.  You have interesting theories, but scientifically, you are way off.  You don't have ANY autosomal DNA in you from 800 years ago.  The most you may have would be about 200 years.  No, 11 segments aren't 11 ancestors.  Autosomal DNA is a card shuffle. Or my example of a pot of boiling spaghetti.  If you buy 2 different brands and boil them together, you can't tell them apart.  Same thing with the DNA.  Just because you match someone on chromosome 2 at location 1234 though location 4567, doesn't mean that someone else near those locations are the same ancestor.  It gets shuffled around or mixed up in the boiling water of the spaghetti pot.  Then there's the issue of the compounded blocks (I don't remember the scientific name right now).

I have a lot going on right now and want to get the correct answer from the scientists at FTDNA so misinformation on DNA is not disseminated through this list.
