Hello Jeffrey,
We've been in private contact, but I wanted to publicly mention something else about your ancestors that also pertains to my own.
Your ancestor Manuel Antonio d'Areia Mello, who is mentioned in my father's book, is a direct paternal descendant of another set of common ancestors we share. From that line, you and my father are 6th cousins, once removed. We both have the Areia ancestors from Piedade. But since your line is the direct paternal line all the way down to your grandfather, I am hoping you have an uncle with with at least one living male son.
I don't yet know whether Melven or Clyde had any sons. And the reason for my interest is that I am hoping I can convince you to convince them to get the Y-DNA test done by FTDNA.com in order to learn the haplogroup for our Areia line.
And from the Leal da Rosa line, you and my father are 5th cousins. That is our closest link.
It would also be great for you and your cousin Sharon to get the Family Finder DNA test which is on sale right now for a really amazingly low price of about $100. I think I paid $300 for my test, so that's a great deal.
I wrote something about these tests which might help convince you to get them:
And by the way, you and Mike are 5th cousins, once removed, just like for myself. But since Mike has Leal da Rosa ancestors who were cousins who married, it will double up the DNA and the Family Finder test will likely show you as 2nd or 3rd cousins, I would predict.
Thanks,
Doug da Rocha Holmes

Good Morning Jeffrey, always nice to meet another cousin, as Doug has stated his father and I are 4th cousins But I have trouble figuring the5th cousin 12 times removed kind of thing. If you're speaking of the Jose Leal da Rosa born Jan 1806 he is my GGGgrandfather. The Manuel Leal da RosaI think I remember is my connection to Lionel. Maybe Doug can clarify, my mind has been fuzzy last few days. After speaking to Doug I'm almost positive that Manuel is the one that purchased a 6 site burial plot in St. John the Baptist Cemetery, then upon his death in 1886 he left the plot to my GGgrandmother Maria Leal da Rosa b 1868, d 1932. If you can readthe hand written pages on the CCA site that's great, but if you as much trouble as I do Doug has Piedade all extrapulated, he has done a number of things for me and his work is phenominal and very detailed. I'm going to give you a present but if you already have it....Mike

Lionel Rocha Holmes:
I am Jeffrey Tooker. I am grandson to Manual Mello, "MANUEL MELLO (Manuel Antonio d'Areia Mello)" d. Sacramento 1958, and of the "http://www.portugueseancestry.com/ " site. I have sent a check to the webmaster for membership and am awaiting his reply.genresources/pioneers_mn.cfm
In reading the "Pioneers" I have come across "Jose Leal de Roza". This is of great interest, because acording to my mothers oral history Manuel Mello's mother was, DE LINO-LEAL, ISABEL M.
b. 1846. Her father was Leal-Da Rosa, MANUAL (Manoel). Manoels wife was DE LINO, ISAURA MARIA. I have subsequently found that Leal-Da Rosa, MANUAL (Manoel) had a son Jacinto Leal-Da Rosa. Who took the name of Jacinto "Jesse" Leal-Rose in this country. Jacinto was born in 1855 and died in Hollister in 1917. He seems to have come directly From the Azores to Misson San Jose in Alameda county. What we have is a line compiled by my cousin Sharon Nunes Hopingardner in Hollister and myself. It is documented in this country. We do not have documentation for the ties from "MANUEL MELLO (Manuel Antonio d'Areia Mello)" and Jacinto "Jesse" Leal-Rose to Leal-Da Rosa, MANUAL (Manoel). I was wondering if you might put me in touch with someone who may be of help. All of this goes back to Piedade, Pico 1840-1855.
When I was about 13 we use to visit my cousin Sharon and her family. She was Leal-Rose/Fontes/ Nunes then. So there was a tie somewhere between Sacramento and Hollister.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thank you.
Jeffrey Tooker
