Hello Jennifer,
You are fairly closely related to a very good genealogist named David Bertao who wrote the book on the California Whalers a few years back.
I don't know if he is active these days, but he used to do it a lot when you had to be in Portugal to see the books at the archive.
I send him things I find on his ancestors from time to time, so am still in touch.
About your Lemos line, unfortunately, her father, Joaquim Machado de Lemos was an "exposto" which means his mother abandoned him and he was raised with the help of the government there.
His parents are unknown. But his wife was from Sao Jorge and her ancestry is possible to trace.
For your Bertao line, I have always paid attention to all by this name because I am related to all of them, even though I don't have this surname in my own direct line.
The father of the first named Bertao in Terceira was the brother of my ancestor, children of Antonio Alvares, born maybe about 1580.
I hope you plan to get the Family Finder test, because you are sure to find many relatives with ancestors in this part of Terceira that link to you.
I don't know if my DNA will match at a high enough level to show a link between us, but the link is there.
And you'll find it interesting that your direct paternal line is not actually Bertao. As you go back in time, Bertao came from a maternal branch.
Your oldest known male line ancestor is actually Costa and I think his wife is the sister to one of my ancestors, making yet another remote link. :-)

I am looking for more information on my great grandparents, Victorino Machado Pereira de Bertao b. 10 May 1876 Sao Mateus, Terceira, Azores d. 15 Jul 1951 Sacramento, Sacramento, CA. I am looking for information about ther family prior to immigrating to the states in 1907 and 1909. I know his father's name was Ernesto and his mother was Mary Carlotta.--My great grandmother's name was Amelia Da Conceicao Lemos b. 21 Mar 1888 Sao Mateus, Terceira, Azores her parents were Joaquim Machado de Lemos and Isabel Mariana. If anyone can point me in the correct direction as to where I might find more information, I would be very appreciative.Thank you very much!
