The Population Finder will be released when they are comfortable with the
results. Since last year, they have started it over 3 or 4 times!

It will include more populations. The have 50 populations in Europe. Yes,
they have Portugal. Portugal is working. The problem lies with Russia and
Poland. It misidentifies people from those populations. France is also a
problem. It tends to gobble up other nationalities. Once they are able to
resolve these problems, they will release the new Population Finder.

If you have had your DNA tested, check your Population Finder. Some people
now have a survey asking if they have any knowledge of the listed
ethnicities in their background. For most people, the answer is none.
Even if you checked last week, take a peek at your Population Finder to
make sure you didn't get the survey.

Regarding the Population Finder tool that was underneath each one of your
matches for about 5 days....I purposely hunted down Elliott Greenspan the
lead IT/Engineer and asked what the deal was. Two people complained.
TWO! So they decided to err on the side of caution. I asked why it can't
be an option to turn on. He said because the default would have to be on.
I don't do computer programming, so I don't really understand why the
default can't be off. I know it's all binary code with off or on, so I
really don't see the big deal. He really didn't seem that interested in the
opt in suggestion. Well, sometimes, I just don't take no for an answer.
And sometimes I can be a bit of an instigator. So on Sunday, at general
question and answer, I asked again. Bennett asked all the admins that were
at the conference (about 170) if they would like to see it as an option. I
would say most said yes. About 12-15 said no. So Bennett said he'd think
about it. He thinks that it may put more work on the admins (um, turn it
on and see if you like it and if you don't then turn it off. I don't know
how hard that is or what he was thinking when he said that).

As for the current Population Finder (which is more of a cocktail party
piece)...The 4 western European populations are Orkney Islands, French,
Basque, and Spanish. So if you are something that they can't identify, the
default is Orkney Islands. And I assume this is true for other parts of
Europe - they had a default if you didn't fit into any of the populations.

With that being said, I did make a spreadsheet of the current Population
Finder, showing what people had. I used kit numbers only, wrote down the
percentages (I broke down Middle Eastern into Jewish and North African
because someone asked, and I broke down the Asian because someone asked). I
wrote what I thought people were (1/4 Portuguese, etc). I did it in Excel.
Coding for the spreadsheet:
Middle Eastern:
N. Afr = North African
I = Iranian
J = Jewish
M = Mozabite
P = Palestinian
A = Adygel
B = Bedouin
BS = Bedouin South
D = Druze

South Asian:
Y = Yakut
C = Cambodian
H = Han
J = Japanese
L = Lahu
Mal = Malay
Mong = Mongolian

If you want a copy of this, you need Excel and you need to send a separate
email to me at gfscherim at gmail.com. NOT to the list. But remember,
Population Finder is undergoing revision to be more comprehensive and the
current spreadsheet is more cocktail party conversation.

I'll type up more DNA notes tomorrow, I hope.
