I'll guess that the tour guide didn't mention that the sugar cane was brought from Madeira where it had been well established since the 1500s. Pineapple was also a export crop of Madeira and Sao Miguel before cultivation started in Hawaii. I't pretty clear that besides surfing, most of what people identify as Hawaiian is actually Portuguese in origin, sugar cane, pineapple, ukulele
