Could he have been a notary?  If so, then might the priest would have said, 
Notario(?).  In any case, I'm beginning to see that these two godfathers had a 
major influence in the higher education of Domingos Moniz Machado, my husband's 
grandfather.     For one thing, the father of the youngest child, died just 
before the child was born.  The godfather of that child was a negociante 
(businessman??)  Some of the children were named after them I believe:   
Domingos Pereira Machado and Manoel Pereira Machado.  I need to track them to 
see if they were brothers of the mother, Emilia or maybe brothers of Emilia's 
father, name Joaquim Machado Dias.  I just don't know now how Pereira fits in . 
 Now I have two totally new names  in The tree:  Dias and Pereira.

  I'm curious to see how they tied in to the mother, Emilia Moniz machado.  The 
more answers I get, the more research I need to do.  Thank you
