Hello Maria Lima
I can't speculate that he may have been anything else other than a clerck.
If he had been a Notary at the time, he would have been mentioned as such
because a notary held highier regard.
As for your questions on Dias and Pereira, if you persue them I would suggest
that you search for them as "Machado Dias" and "Pereira Machado" to avoid
confusion.
And to find as they might relate you pretty well have to develope a family tree
for both untill you find the common ancestor, if in reality there is one.
Isn't genealogy fun? :))

Thank you, Hermano:
Could he have been a notary? If so, then might the priest would have said,
Notario(?). In any case, I'm beginning to see that these two godfathers had a
major influence in the higher education of Domingos Moniz Machado, my husband's
grandfather. For one thing, the father of the youngest child, died just
before the child was born. The godfather of that child was a negociante
(businessman??) Some of the children were named after them I believe:
Domingos Pereira Machado and Manoel Pereira Machado. I need to track them to
see if they were brothers of the mother, Emilia or maybe brothers of Emilia's
father, name Joaquim Machado Dias. I just don't know now how Pereira fits in .
Now I have two totally new names in The tree: Dias and Pereira.
I'm curious to see how they tied in to the mother, Emilia Moniz machado. The
more answers I get, the more research I need to do. Thank you
Maria Elena

For that time period I would think that "escrevente" means that Domingos was a
clerck in an office of some sort, possibly ? in legal matters.

Could he have been a typesetter? Maybe he worked in a print shop, or for the
newspaper setting the print? Or for a book maker setting the print? Would
that also be an escrevente?
