Climbatree, The people on all the islands used a surname for the most part. However, for the most part, women did NOT use surnames from the mid1800s to 1911.
Surnames following a pattern such as on the island of Sao Jorge where it changes every generation or 2? That happens in most places. Most of my research has the names changing. I'm the 10th generation to carry Mello and I'd say that is much more unusual.
