Jacinta de Mello marr found in FVC! Hermano,
Thanks for checking! I'm not sure of the original spelling. I know the
descendants predominantly used Algrava or Algarva in California and I have
never found anyone using those two variations in the US who were not related to
me. According to my own research it does not appear in any of my lines in
Fenais da Vera Cruz or Achada use either Algarvia/Algarvio alone or as a
compound surname. I've covered the 1700s to 1882. I believe that Antonio
tacked in on when he got to Hawaii and then his brothers followed when they got
to California between 1907 and 1920. As they were illiterate it's any guess
what their true intent was. Their descendants used Pacheco, Algrava, or
Algarva.

most certainly must be "Algarvio". I have in my database a few variations of
that name; do Rego Algarvio, de Medeiros Algarvio, Tavares Algarvio, Pacheco
Tavares Algarvio, Nunes Algarvio, to name a few.
Although most of mine are from Lagoa, they can be found elsewhere.
Sorry that I don't have you Antonio Pacheco Algarvio.

Trying again...

JR, I forget sometimes that you all haven't come along on this journey with my
for the last 25 years. I originally thought the family added Algarvia
(Algrava, Algarva, etc.) to coincide with my great grandfather's escape to
California. In 1906, he was diagnosed with leprosy and marked for deportation
to Molokai. He was smuggled out of Hawaii with the help of family. His family
used the surname Smith and some of the others began using Algrava/Algarva.

My whole theory was blown when a cousin produced a copy of Antonio Pacheco's
Santo Antonio Society membership certificate. It's dated 1903 (well before the
leprosy date) and his name was given as Antonio Pacheco Algarvia.

I will go through the1856-1863 in Algarvia and see if they pop up. If not, I
will then determine my ancestors were pranksters that loved sending me on a
wild goose chase ;)

cited a clue by using the name Algarvia. It is possible they went and lived in
Algarvia and thus the nickname Algarvia. I have ancestors that lived in three
places. It depends on the circumstances of what lands they owned, or where the
work was. So try looking in Algarvia for Antonio and all baptisms between 1856
and 1860!
