I looked up my immigrant ancestors. One registered 4 months in advance, the other registered 22 days in advance.
I really think it just depends. Like I said, I found them by starting the day before. If the ship arrived on Feb. 1, I start looking on Jan. 31 and work my way back in time. I don't want to miss them, even though the ship didn't sail in 1 day.
