Today I came across this record. Twins both named Maria!

I was looking at an index yesterday (I was looking for a Maria) and there were
a number of Maria’s that were expostos and Pais Incognitos. So I don’t think
there was any rule. In my sadistic mind I sometimes wonder if the Priest was
naming them after the real parents.

reserved for "legitimate" children? >>

Maybe. I never thought about it. I just went right now to Sao Miguel Arcanjo
church (the Matriz - they seem to have more expostos) in Vila Franca on Sao
Miguel island and I checked the baptism index for Maria. I looked at the end
of the Marias, the beginning of the Marias, Marias born to parents whose name
start with P (for Pais incognitos), Marias born to parents whose name start
with I (for Incognitos). I didn't see any. I don't know if they weren't
indexed or maybe it's one of those rules, like you observed. Next time I'm
searching the records, I'm going to remember that and see if it pans out (at
least on Sao Miguel where I do most of my research).
