Here is what the Biblioteca of Ponta Delgada told me about the passaportes. They told me this around 2002-2005. It does NOT agree with what they uploaded to the Internet.
*District archive of Horta*: 1836‑1939; since 1856 they are indexed and give the towns or parishes of birth. *District archive of Angra do Heroismo*: 1775‑1818, 1844‑1845, 1857‑1924. *District archive of Ponta Delgada*: Existing: 1875 May‑1883 Oct; 1894 Nov ‑ 1908 Oct; 1910 Jan‑1920 Jan; 1922 Sep‑1939 Dec; 1950 Feb‑1953 Mar. All records before and in the gaps are missing. Available only at library. You will have to hire a researcher for the Feb 1950- Mar 1953 records. And you'll need to understand that you will pay the researcher, but s/he may come up with nothing.
