Thank you again, Cheri. Re family heritage, family lore is that Joseph 
"jumped ship" in Boston and may have been here illegally. I know they were 
rather poor for those times. That may explain their reluctance to be known 
as Portuguese.
Any recommendations as to where to go next to research the family? I looked 
at the passaportes records but didn't know how to find a particular name as 
there wasn't a search box.
