A person that snuck on board a ship is a stowaway. Rick Richard Francis Pimentel Epping, NH From: azores@googlegroups.com [mailto:azores@googlegroups.com] On Behalf Of luiznoia . It took a lot of manipulation to make this record readable. She is at the bottom line. Colleta's "They Came In Ships" for a full explanation. If he snuck on the ship in the Azores, he would have been discovered and counted on the American end. Pretty hard not to be discovered during a 2 or so week voyage. I doubt that being poor had anything to do with it. Mine were pretty poor upon entry too. Who knows why our ancestors did some things. A "how to" is on the Azores GenWeb here: http://goo.gl/3KZnNs You have to know when your ancestor sailed and then you have to look at the Passaportes page by page and hunt for them. Re family heritage, family lore is that Joseph "jumped ship" in Boston and may have been here illegally. I know they were rather poor for those times. That may explain their reluctance to be known as Portuguese. Any recommendations as to where to go next to research the family? I looked at the passaportes records but didn't know how to find a particular name as there wasn't a search box. I found a marriage record for my great grandparents, I think. It seems my great grandfaher's surname was Ramos, not Francis. I am trying to verify this information. My problem is in trying to decipher the handwriting on the marriage record. I am not sure of the spelling of Ramos. Can anyone help me with this? I appreciate the help. -- For options, such as changing to List, Digest, Abridged, or No Mail (vacation) mode, log into your Google account and visit this group at http://groups.google.com/group/Azores .
