I have found errors in on line searches and from trees from LDS (Family
Search). I remember several years ago I made contact with a person that shared
a family name with. He sent me a packet with the information he had which was
done by a great uncle around the turn of the century. This was around the time
when genealogy was becoming in vogue with the new middle class. Well I worked
his line and could never find evidence it was correct it seems there was a
fictitious person in the tree that could not be documented. Another tree I got
from Family Search had the right name but it was the wrong person with the same
name as the right person. “Trust but verify”

If you mean data from someone’s family tree…… I usually try to contact the
person who posted it to find out their relationship and the sources they used.
Sounds good, right? But, my experience on Ancestry is that the person I contact
usually just copied the tree info from others, so no help there.

I haven’t had a lot of luck with folks from FamilySearch.org, either.
Sometimes, but not often, as lots of people don’t use their email address for
contact purposes.

The best procedure is to just look at this data as clues that you can followup
on, to prove or disprove by your own research.

So when you go to ancestry or family search and are able to hook into a record
that appears to match yours (correct names and dates) but there are no sources
attached, cited, or copies of documents, do you trust that this really is your
person? I am always careful to both cite my source and add a copy of the
document where possible so it makes me question when records are not done the
same. Opinions?
