A trip to the library and archives in Ponta Delgada on the island of Sao
Miguel would have done you no good anyways. They hold the records for the
islands of Sao Miguel and Santa Maria only. The records for the island of
Faial (as well as Pico, Flores, and Corvo) are on Faial in the archive in
Horta.

You'll need to find your freguesia (village) by using U.S. sources before
making that jump overseas. Read (and even reread) parts 1a-1e. It may take
you only a couple of months to figure out the freguesia. Your best bet is
the U.S. censuses to narrow down a time frame for immigration and then
trying to find them coming in (either NY, Providence, New Bedford, or
Boston) or going out (leaving from Horta). Also get obituaries on as many
of the kids as you can.  One of them may mention where they were born or
that they are survived by someone over there.
