Lisa, I have the book that you are speaking about "The Holy Ghost Festas".
It was published by Portuguese Heritage Publications and is now out of
print. You can get a CD of the book by going to their webpage,
PortugueseBooks.org This was the information that they gave me last year when
I was
looking for the book for a friend.

Here is an excerpt from their webpage.
.
Note: This publication is currently sold out and there are no future
plans for a 3rd edition. Anyone interested in or doing research on the
Portuguese in California may acquire the _Holy Ghost Festas CD_
(http://portuguesebooks.org/books/the-holy-ghost-festas-cd/) – the complete
text of the
original book.

The book about the festas is The Holy Ghost Festas: A Historic
Perspective of the Portuguese in California, Tony P. Goulart, published by
Portuguese
Chamber of Commerce of San Jose in 2003. I checked World Cat and it is
available in many libraries in California and a few other random libraries
across the country. On World Cat it looks like you can search within the
book but when I tried to search the names and places that I know are in the
book, "no matches" returned.

What was the name of the book you found the additional information in? The
book might be found in another library also.

Great that you found photos of your family members.

The UPEC books (all in Portuguese of course) contained the records of the
business of the organization. There were some pages in the books that
folded out with copies of the "death" records showing what was paid out and to

whom. I have a close friend who has a great great grandfather that was
president of the UPEC for a time so there were many many references to him in
the books.

I did find a small gem in a book about the Festas in California. There is
a 1-4 page history of each of the festas from different areas all over
California. I learned that my 3g uncle founded the festa in Sausalito AND
there was a photo of him in the book! Also, there was a photo from the Yreka
area festa of some cousins through another 3g uncle.

Hi!
I would be interested to hear what you find as I live in Sacramento. I
have memories of going to going to a few conventions with my mom of the SPRSI
and I just have a hunch that there would be little of genealogical value in
“Sessions of the Supreme Council of UPEC” but am interested to hear what
you find. The real value of the membership books are that they often give
the island of origin information and some family relationships in the
beneficiaries listed in their rolls.
Happy hunting!

PS….I have not been to that library for years but if I am remembering
correctly, I did look at original books for marriages in Alameda County
….which
was very cool.

Researching at the State Library in Sacramento, CA this morning. If
anyone is interested, they have four volumes of books with the Sessions of the

Supreme Council of UPEC:  San Leandro, 1887-1898; Santa Cruz,  1899-1903;
San Rafael, 1904-1907; and San Jose, 1924-1927. There are no indexes so you
would need to know which book to look in and really scour it for your
person.
