Chelly, I don't know how "whaler" was spelled (or misspelled) back then, but today it's "baleeiro." He was a whaler.
As to Maria, it says they are from the parish Senhora da Graça, "logar" of Faial...If she was from the island of Faial, they would have said "ilha de Faial". Lugar (modern spelling) is the place. So technically, they are from the parish of Nossa Senhora da Graça, in the freguesia (village) of Faial da Terra. The priest was saving space and ink by dropping certain words, I guess. A listing of Sao Miguel churches and their towns is here: http://www.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~azrwgw/maps-churches-and-villages/sao-miguel.html Francisco's baptism....the word you are looking for when the parents are married is "recebidos." The literal translation is "received." Line 11 from the BOTTOM says, "natives, received, parishioners, and living in the something of this freguesia. So they are from Porto Formoso. You're going to have to look for a Jose Anybody (and look real hard at the Joao too so you aren't misreading) married to a Roza Anybody. If that doesn't work, start collecting Francisco's siblings working back in time. When you go about 4 years with no kids, go back to kid 1 and start looking for the marriage the day before. Unless you see that the first couple of kids were born out of wedlock, then you'll find the marriage sandwiched between a couple of kids. You're doing quite well if you are getting the names and dates already! You'll be able to help others soon!
