My husband's grandparents were married in 1906 in Santa Luzia. From the marriage record it's clear that he couldn't write and she could. There's an old family story that the families weren't happy about the marriage and so the newlyweds left the islands as soon as they could. The difference in education levels makes me imagine there's some credence to this story. Maybe her family thought she was marrying down. Something similar happened in the '60s to my own parents in Australia. They fled their home state because of their families were hostile to the union.
