My grandparents settled in New Bedford from Ribiera Quente on São Miguel about a decade before yours came over - my father and his sisters were all born in New Bedford. While they spoke Portuguese, they never taught us (I always thought it was so that they could talk without my brothers or I being able to listen in on their conversations.) I grew up an hour away from new Bedford, so only have memories of the area before my dad died when I was a kid. Still, driving down there, I had to go around the various streets where the families had lived, which was interesting. I also ran into a woman in the Assessor's office who was 100 and grew up on the same street my dad did. Unfortunately, she didn't remember the family, but it was nice to have that contact (and that she was still working for the town after all these years!)
