It takes practice to learn to read the writing. And it's not hard to find once you get the correct pieces of information. Although Annie did not state a date for arrival in America, she had enough information. Bill most likely looked up the arrival in America on Ancestry, then went over to the Azorean passaportes and started looking backwards from that date, looking for a Margarida. It would have taken him longer if he was looking for a Maria! Anyways, the more you read the records (or take a look at what people transcribe here), the better you get at reading them.
In Salt Lake in June, we have over 20 hours of classes and more than 10 hours of research assistance :) People start to get the hang of it, as we get less and less questions on how to read as the conference gets to the end.
