Hi Gerri, We don't alphabetize under the "de da do dos das," etc stuff. But as you said, it may be part of your legal name if you live in Canada or America. I'm a Mello. My cousin in Canada is a DeMelo. That's his legal name. My genealogy program has a "Sort by" field so I can file him under the Ms and search for him under the Ms.
Or you can do it Portuguese style and alphabetize by first name. Which my genealogy program allows me to do. By a genealogy program, I mean a fully-featured program that lives on your computer. Not one of the limited web-based tree. You can't do these things on web based sites.
